Ever since I owned my first car, I’ve always wanted a scale model of it to paint and option to exactly match the real one. And I’ve usually had the hardest time finding it.
The following are cars that I had owned, in somewhat chronological order, that I wanted a scale model to match (certainly not all the cars I’ve owned, as there are few I want to forget).
My very first car was a 1982 Pontiac J2000 (Sunbird),I would have loved a miniature of it. There are several scale models available, but all hatchbacks, and I had a coupe.
1990 Plymouth Laser RS Turbo -
My 2nd car. This is the one I wanted
really
bad and I’ve searched high and low for, yet I still haven’t found anything. While the car is long gone, I would still love any version.
1993 Jeep Cherokee - There are some available today, but none when I owned it.
1990 Eagle Talon TSi AWD - same as the Plymouth Laser, nothing available. A damn shame the 1G DSM line is not represented.
Oddly enough, I was able easily find a version of my wife’s
1996 Grand Caravan
. (yes, I bought the model kit - I know, I have a problem)
1987 Pontiac Fiero GT (fastback)
- Both plastic and diecast! Hard to find and somewhat pricey in the GT fastback style, I still was able to get both. By comparison, the notchback Fiero is easy to find in both plastic and diecast in many more scales and colors.
The diecast was even the right color!
2010 Jeep Liberty
- Nothing in the new (KK) style that I have, just the original (KJ) style. Too bad, I love my Jeep.
2013 Hyundai Elanta - Really?!? I wasn’t even looking for this! A frikin’ Elantra! Heck, I even had a choice of color! (And yes, I bought this one too)
2012 Hyundai Veloster Not technically MY car, but as as stocking stuffer for my son. Another Hyundai, but this one is kinda cool, and my son loves his.
And finally, the
2015
Subaru WRX
- another easy one to locate. So maybe it’s just the newer cars that can be found easily.
I’ll have to paint the wheels to match, and lose the STI spoiler (I have the Limited, not the STI) But these are super easy to find, and in multiple colors.
I know that many collect diecast or models in general, but how many try to get a miniature of what they have in the driveway (or garage, or on blocks in the back yard..) and how much of a challenge has it been? I’m assuming that most newer cars are available, but obviously not all of them are going to be easy to find.
But this? I can’t find a 1G DSM, but this is available in 3 colors?
Sometimes life isn’t fair.

There is one E90M3 model in existence, other than the 1:1, and I own it. I can’t find an exact match for either my 128i or my 328i. There is a 1997 Explorer Sport in the correct color out there, I just need to track it down.

I try to, but am not always successful. I have a model coming from Japan (unfortunately not overnight) for my ‘09 Miata in the right color.

Somehow, painting a model seems silly when my car needs so much work. I dont really care to have a focus st model either.

I’ve always wanted it the other way round. I hope to own a real car version of a Hot Wheels car I had.

I also have found a few models of cars I’ve owned, I have a 1:43 scale of my 1st car a 1988 Cadillac Brougham, 89 Prelude, in 1:43 scale and 1:64, I found a similar Subaru legacy wagon in 1:43 scale as well as a Toyota Corolla by the same brand as your elantra but had to repaint it to match mine as well as both 1:64 and 1:43 scale of my current 2012 rav 4. The ones I don’t have are models of a plymouth acclaim, 1994 dodge dakota extended cab. 1990's mopars don’t get much love in the die cast world.

I have dealer promos of the continental version of my ‘59 Lincoln and the two-door Victoria version of my ‘63 Ford. I have a tiny pewter version of my Land Rover as well, and a ‘61 Ranchero Ertl kit, which is close to my ‘63 but not quite the same.
The ‘87 Benz, nothing yet.

I
had been looking for a very long time when a resin model of the
505 V6
came out. Nothing opens, but it’s very well made.
Other than that, I never found any of my own cars. There are 1960 Impala convertibles available, but I’ve never seen 2 door sedan Bel Air. Surprisingly, no AW11 MR2, there is a model kit available, but I’d rather stay with 1/18 die cast
.
No L040 Pajero available, I’d really want this, and a standard red 1/18 die cast RX-8, no X
men version or racing livery.
My friends once surpised me with a limited edition die cast model of my
dream car
. I just need the matching car now :)

This doesn’t make sense to me. The accent has always been in my mind a sedan as an afterthought, like the Fiesta or Mirage sedan

Yep :) Dont have the van anymore, but I kept the model. Painted it the exact color. Sad no one makes a 2nd gen S-10.

I think, globally, it’s the other way around. The hatchbacks seem to be more common in North America, but, in South Korea and a lot of Asian markets, the sedan was far more common.

WEIRD. Do you have any speculation as to why? I would think NA would be the least receptive to hatches
promoted by the color red

I like to think the 1:1 scale Volvo 240 in my driveway is basically a giant, perpetually unfinished model kit.
The hunt is more successful for some than others. My ND Miata collection looks pretty good with the Tomica toy and the Tamiya version still in-box. My dad somehow found a 2009 Camry in the same shade of red and it lives on top of the TV in my parents’ house. Never could find a scale-model Integra sedan though, so still looking for that.

I started doing this when I had a Neon.
The only car I never found a scale model/diecast of in any size was my 2004 Mazda3 hatch. There was a Mazdaspeed3 version though. Close enough.
Currently I have this on my shelf at home
and in my garage

Not sure! I know the hatches here could be had for ridiculously cheap new
in their time as base trims like mine (like the Mirage is today)
.

I’ve only ever found one decent model of any cars that I have ever owned... and trust me I have been looking. When I found said model I immediately paid way too much for it, o nly for the company to send the completely wrong car . Then when contacted about it they confirmed that they didn’t have any more of the model I actually wanted, and probably wouldn’t eve r be getting anymore of them.
But if anyone ever gets a lead on where I can find a decently large scale model of a f irst Gen S-10 pickup or blazer , late 2nd gen S10 pickup , 88-91 Civic h atchback (this is the one I almost had), or a 06-11 Civic s edan I would greatly appreciate it.

Theres also the problem that between 1979 and 1981 the trans am was available with like 12 different graphic colors/designs so matching is difficult.
If only EssExTee could be so grossly incandescent

I’ve looked for all my cars but 1) no body cares enough about the Geo Metro to make a model and 2) the other ones (Neon and 528i) are completely overshadowed by their performance models. I can only find SRT-4 and M5 models.

I have both a model and a diecast of my Camaro, or at least similar. There aren’t many models of base cars on the market. The model is still in the box as the picture on the box looks better than any model I’ve ever put together. Or the real car for that matter.

Dinky version:
1:1
Now I find an odd Chinese maker with one of these in 1:18 , quality has me worried but it is tempting:

Was your old one

If you have a Twitter, Facebook or Google account, try using one of those to sign in to Kinja and see if that gets your old account back?

Only the interesting ones. I have diecast models of my E46 M3 and C63 AMG in my office, and a third one incoming of my new acquisition . There are a couple of cars in my past I’d like to find models of, but I certainly don’t need one of everything I’ve owned.

I found a 1:43 scale of the Transit Connect on Amazon. If I was any good with painting, I’d add the brush stripes that are on mine. I also have the Taurus SHO wheels on the TC, but cannot find a Gen II Taurus SHO die cast to steal the wheels from. The model is an XLT trim of t he cargo van, while my van is the XL with black unpainted bumpers.
I couldn’t find many Chrysler 200 models, I managed to find ONE. It is a black 200S. I own a gray 200 Limited, so I settled.
